Liberal Democrats in Nelson are celebrating their candidate Debbie Cragg's win in the Clover Hill ward by-election for Nelson Town Council, held last Thursday. Debbie won by just 16 votes from the Tories following a Conservative campaign "more like a parliamentary by-election than one for a parish council". Debbie Cragg turned a 17 vote losing margin last May into a 16 vote victory this time. She said: "I am thrilled to have won this time. What I promised to do was to concentrate on all the very local problems like litter and dog fouling, and work with my Liberal Democrat colleagues to help make Clover Hill a better place for people to live. I will now do that." Liberal Democrat agent Tony Greaves said that it was a super win against a professional Tory campaign backed by the large amounts of money that Lord Ashcroft at Conservative HQ in London is pouring into Pendle. He said: "The Conservatives had a professional call centre operation working on the campaign and brought in helpers from as far afield as Cheshire! We are delighted to have held off the Tory onslaught and trounced the Labour-backed 'Independent' into a poor third place."
