The Nottingham Declaration

Pendle Council has become the latest council to show its commitment to climate change by signing the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change. The Declaration commits Pendle to looking at ways of addressing the causes and effects of climate change to benefit everyone in Pendle.

It was Lib Dem Waterside Councillor and Pendle Council's Energy Champion Graham Roach who put forward the idea that the Council should sign the Declaration. Graham said:

"We recognise that climate change is likely to bring about massive changes within our community this century. There is more and more evidence that climate change is occurring and will have far reaching effects on the UK's economy, society and environment.

"As community leaders, we ought to be working with local businesses and residents to see how we can all reduce our energy consumption and better plan for the consequences of climate change.

"We will also be looking at how we can reduce the Council's carbon emissions - for example, reducing the amount of energy we use by encouraging all staff to turn off lights when they leave the office.

"We'll also try to make our buildings more energy efficient, as well as promoting car sharing and public transport to our staff.

"If we all make small changes to our lifestyles, together it's going to have a massive impact."

Alan Davies, Leader of Pendle Council, said :

"As a Council, we were more than happy to sign the Nottingham Declaration.

"It shows just how seriously we take climate change and how committed we are to work with everyone locally to reduce energy use to help improve the environment.

"As we have already shown, we are working hard to make Pendle a cleaner, greener and safer place to live, work and visit.

"Looking at how Pendle can reduce its contribution towards climate change is certainly one way of making sure the area remains cleaner and greener for both present and future generations."

Over 200 local councils have now signed up to the Declaration, each pledging to actively tackle climate change and help the UK deliver its national climate change targets.
